Big news! Welcome to the Black Virginia Theatre Alliance’s 2026–2027 season—Bloodlines & Blueprints.

“We are not self-made—we are ancestor-carried. The blood in our veins holds stories of strength, survival, wisdom, and sacrifice. Every step we take is guided by footprints laid down long before us.” — Unknown

A Note from Artistic Director TK:
Oftentimes as young artists, we are told, “you are the future.” Many others are told the same. It is as if hope has been wrapped up and shipped off to future generations to single-handedly “save the world.” But I pose the question: can we truly embody and helm our greater future if we have yet to fully analyze our history, alchemizing it as a tool against mass destruction?

Understanding the importance of our bloodlines reveals how they have laid the very blueprint of the modern world and, more specifically, America. My intention this season is to foster community, deep dialogue, and genuine galvanization surrounding ground-breaking productions that ignite the utilization of our history. We must understand—or at least try to understand—how we move forward toward radical love, liberation, and JOY.

To honor this vision, we are expanding what our programming looks like entirely this season. We are bringing you a full spectrum of work that spans from a concert performance of a cult classic with a twist, to rich contemporary explorations of Yoruba tradition, southern gothic black femme rage, to a powerful staged reading of a contemporary antebellum play set right here in Richmond .

As the African proverb reminds us: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”We invite you to gather, reflect, and build with us all season long
