ARTISTIC DIRECTORS NOTE:

Black and Indigenous people are the original cultivators of the land. While this deep connection has often been tragically tied to oppression, I believe it is fundamentally rooted in liberation: the ability to gather, connect, and become one with the divine inherent in nature.

As we carry these ancestral ties within our nervous systems, this beautiful play asks a critical question: What does it mean to observe, spectate, and watch a privilege?

Historically, the American theatre device has frequently positioned Black people’s lived experiences and traumas as objects to be observed for external understanding. This production seeks to flip and interrogate that device. It serves as a necessary mechanism to ask: How much of a crisis goes unseen and unheard when viewed through only one lens? The black climate crisis is an urgent matter yet it is not mainstream or receiving national coverage.

We are not dismissing the real, complex lived experiences of these characters. Instead, we are cultivating a space for collective liberation—a dynamic conversation where the intersecting threads of observation, privilege, and historical context lead us toward a shared understanding.

DIRECTORS NOTE:

Breathe. In for 4, hold for 7, release for 8.

LUNGS is a raw depiction of the life cycle of a relationship: between lovers, to the earth, to oneself. It's relentless in its pace, its passion and its possibility. The UK born Duncan Macmillian encourages us to set his piece in our unique environment: USA. Richmond. 2025. While working through our focused lens, pivotal questions arose: Who gets to have this privileged conversation? Who bears the most weight in creating life? How does personal choice align with collective liberation?

Lungs are the last organs to form before a fetus is birthed. The brief window between creation and first breath paints a delicate metaphor for our existence. We see its cadence in every facet of life; the short leap from genesis to action. What is initially a reflex of our physical makeup, becomes a choice to attach meaning, nuance and purpose to the breath. To fully develop, our lungs take 8 years, a gentle nod to the infinite.

The last few years in our flailing ecosystem have felt like liminal space; a shape I recognize, but a place devoid of connection and sense of time. This space has challenged me to peer hard through the looking glass, breathe and surrender to becoming. It has exposed a part of myself that is raw, primal and bare, stripping away all distraction and dead weight.

And the challenge is this: we have the choice to create meaning, to be brave, to let go and transform into something new. That same short leap we’ve made millions of times. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. This. Now. Us.

DESIGN NOTE

A zero-waste guideline, informed by UK production standards, was implemented across all design departments. The Sound and Lighting designers undertook the creative challenge of producing a unique technical feature: a single, unbroken cue. This design choice conceptually represents the continuous nature of the environment and its movement independent of human interaction and also respects the playwrights request of no separate cue’s.
